At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we often see how one meaningful connection can ripple through a lifetime, inspiring not only the individual but an entire community. Tony Brooks’ journey with BBBS is a heartwarming example of this ripple effect—spanning decades, cities, and generations of mentorship. Tony’s childhood was marked by significant challenges, including his parents’ divorce and his father being shot in the line of duty. But in 1970, at just 9 or 10 years old and in Grade 6, Tony’s life changed when he was matched with his Big Brother, Bob Sheehan, through BBBS in Sault Ste. Marie.
A Match that Made a Difference
Tony fondly recalls the kindness and stability that Bob and his wife, Mary, brought to his life. Mary’s home-cooked meals—all delicious, except for the artichokes, Tony jokes—and time spent with their two Irish Setters, whether at dog shows or on woodland hikes, became cherished memories. One standout moment was when Bob took Tony to his first concert, where they had front-row seats to see the legendary Harry Belafonte. “Bob was such a calm person, and I really enjoyed talking with him,” Tony shared. Their match lasted about two years, but its impact would resonate throughout Tony’s life.
Giving Back
A Big Brother in St. Thomas In 1996, Tony moved to St. Thomas with a desire to give back the same kind of support and friendship he received as a child. Joining BBBS St. Thomas-Elgin, he became a Big Brother and was matched with Sean. Over the next year and a half, they attended Stars hockey games, Delaware Speedway, and agency events. Their match came to a natural close when Sean’s family dynamics changed, but Tony’s passion for mentoring only grew. In 2001, Tony became a Big Brother again, this time to 8-year-old Charlie. Over their four years together, the pair bonded deeply over their shared love of hockey, with Tony even coaching Charlie’s team. Tony also remained a vital part of BBBS St. Thomas-Elgin through events like curling and golf, contributing to the agency’s mission in numerous ways.
A Lifetime of Service
Tony’s life—both in and out of BBBS—has been guided by a strong belief he developed during his time in the Navy: “When you serve, you achieve the most.” His years as a Big Brother allowed him to live this value fully, whether teaching a child to tie their shoes or helping them discover the joy of sports. Reflecting on his experience, Tony credits his time with Barb, a former Executive Director of BBBS St. Thomas-Elgin, as a grounding influence during his matches. Her calm demeanor, much like Bob’s, encouraged Tony to continue giving back.
A Grateful Agency
We at BBBS are incredibly thankful for Tony’s years of dedication and support. From mentoring two Littles to staying actively involved in events, Tony has exemplified the power of mentorship and its ability to shape lives for the better. His story is a shining reminder of the difference one person can make and the lasting legacy of a kind-hearted mentor. Thank you, Tony, for being a beacon of hope and inspiration for so many. Your story continues to remind us all why we do what we do: to ignite potential and change lives, one meaningful connection at a time.
