On April 28-30, Executive Director Carolyn Johnson and service delivery staff Jessica Koch and Lara Elkhayri of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Thomas-Elgin team had the opportunity to attend the 2026 National Convention, joining colleagues from across the country for two days of learning, collaboration, and inspiration.
Hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, the annual convention brings together agencies from coast to coast to share ideas, strengthen skills, and celebrate the impact of mentoring nationwide.
Learning from Leaders Across Canada
Throughout the two-day event, our team participated in a wide range of sessions designed to support and strengthen mentoring programs. From engaging keynote presentations to hands-on workshops, the agenda focused on addressing current challenges, exploring new opportunities, and sharing best practices in youth mentoring.
These sessions provided valuable insights into program development, community engagement, and innovative approaches to supporting young people—insights we’re excited to bring back to our work here in Elgin County.
Building Connections That Strengthen Our Work
One of the most impactful parts of the convention was the opportunity to connect with other BBBS agencies from across Canada. Through networking sessions and informal conversations, our team exchanged ideas, shared experiences, and learned from the successes and challenges of others in the mentoring sector.
These connections are vital. They help ensure that we continue to grow, evolve, and deliver the highest quality mentoring programs for the young people and families we serve.
Celebrating the Power of Mentorship
In addition to learning and networking, the convention also offered moments to reflect and celebrate the incredible impact of mentoring. Events throughout the agenda highlighted the stories, achievements, and dedication of mentors, staff, and young people across the country.
These moments served as a powerful reminder of why we do this work—and the life-changing difference that one caring, consistent relationship can make.
Bringing It Back to Our Community
Attending the National Convention reinforces our commitment to continuous learning and improvement. By investing in professional development and collaboration, we’re better equipped to support local youth and create meaningful, lasting mentoring relationships.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to represent St. Thomas-Elgin on the national stage and return with fresh ideas, renewed energy, and a deeper sense of connection to the BBBS network across Canada.
Because when we come together to learn and grow, the impact reaches far beyond the convention—it reaches every young person we serve.
